When someone tells me they were completely fine at breakfast and could barely get out of bed by dinner β fever, aching all over, wiped out β that abrupt crash is classic flu, and a cold almost never does that. Vaccinated people who still catch the flu are far less likely to end up hospitalized or in the ICU. So the calculus is really about who: for a high-risk patient, I'll often start an antiviral quickly β sometimes even before the swab result is back β because the downside of waiting is a hospitalization I could have prevented. For a healthy 30-year-old who's already three days in, rest and fluids usually make more sense than a prescription. One thing an antiviral is not: a substitute for the vaccine. It treats an infection you already have; the shot is what keeps you from getting there.
If you're not in a high-risk group, the flu is mostly managed at home, and the fundamentals are unglamorous but effective: rest, fluids, and fever control. Sleep as much as your body demands. Drink steadily β water, broth, electrolyte drinks β because fever and poor appetite quietly dehydrate you. Acetaminophen or ibuprofen brings down fever and eases the body aches. Stay home until you've been fever-free for 24 hours without medication; you're protecting everyone you'd otherwise expose.
